Toronto Summer and Articling Programs

Student programs at Blakes in Toronto are designed to ensure that students have a well-rounded experience by exposing them to different areas of business law. We invest in our students’ careers, helping them grow and develop through robust learning and training opportunities.

As students complete challenging work with the top lawyers in Canada, they hone their legal skills and learn what it’s like to practice law on Bay Street. It’s an experience defined by exceptional people and lasting relationships. Our collegial, friendly environment encourages meaningful connections that can shape a career and last a lifetime. We know that to thrive as a Firm, we must continue to foster an inclusive workplace where everyone can be their authentic self.

Train With the Best Lawyers in Canada

Our well-rounded student programs are a springboard to a fulfilling career in law. Here's what you can expect.

  • Working With Our Lawyers

Students can choose to work within different practice groups. They complete rotations in two practice groups during the summer and four groups during articling.

    The practice groups include:

  • Mentoring

Blakes has a long tradition of providing a strong foundation for legal careers through top-notch mentoring. Our mentorship program is at the core of what we do. In each practice-group rotation, students are assigned a mentor whose role is to ensure students are integrated into the group and receiving interesting and varied assignments.

Our lawyers have benefited from the wise counsel of more senior members of the Firm, and passing those lessons on to our students drives continued success at Blakes.

  • Professional Development

There is a strong culture of learning at Blakes. We believe that training our people and providing continuing education are key to our success. Students benefit from a comprehensive professional development program throughout their time with the Firm. This program exposes students to different practice groups and helps them develop their legal and professional skills.

  • Pro Bono Work

Blakes takes a leadership role in supporting pro bono initiatives in Canada. The Firm was among the first national law firms in Canada to adopt a formal pro bono policy that recognizes the value of work done on pro bono matters. Our legal professionals, including students, are encouraged to seek out opportunities to undertake pro bono work.

  • Evaluation & Feedback

Our goal in the evaluation and feedback process is to help students develop skills as lawyers in training. In addition to the informal feedback received throughout each rotation, there is also a formal evaluation processAt the end of a rotation, students are asked to identify the legal professionals who can evaluate their work performance and provide feedback. The feedback is then discussed with each student in a performance review meeting with members of the Student Committee.

  • Social Events

Blakes holds social events for students throughout the summer and articling terms to ensure they get to know each other and our legal professionals. Past events have included Raptors games, cooking classes, tours of the Art Gallery of Ontario and scavenger hunts.
